Understanding damp

Similar signs. Different causes.

A damp patch is a symptom. Your survey helps identify what is behind it.

Damp and salt staining low on a wall beside a radiator
Signs near floor level

Rising damp

Low level staining or damaged plaster can be signs of rising damp, but other causes can look similar.

Penetrating damp staining across an internal wall
Patches that worsen after rain

Penetrating damp

Moisture may enter through defects in walls, roofing or rainwater goods. We look for the source.

Condensation and moisture on a window
Mould, misted windows or cold corners

Condensation and mould

Indoor moisture can collect on cold surfaces. We assess ventilation, heating and other contributing factors.

We assess the evidence before recommending treatment.

Straight answers

Questions before you book?

Here are some common questions. If you need anything else, call 0333 006 4138.

Who qualifies for a free damp survey?

Homeowners who live in the property, anywhere we cover in England. Landlords, letting agents, housing providers and commercial premises are covered by our commercial damp survey service, which is priced separately. People buying a house need a pre purchase report for lenders and solicitors, which is also a paid survey.

Will I be pressured to sign on the day?

No. The surveyor explains what they found, and you will receive a written quote. Sit on it, get other quotes, or bin it. Nobody rings you three times a day afterwards.

How long does a damp survey take and do I need to prepare?

Around an hour for a typical house. Clear access to the affected walls helps, so move furniture away from them if you can. Nothing else is needed.

What if it turns out to be condensation or mould, not rising damp?

Then we tell you that. Condensation and mould are often fixed with ventilation and heating changes rather than a damp proof course, and we will say so rather than sell you a treatment you do not need.

Do you treat the damp as well as survey it?

Yes. Damp proofing, rising damp treatment, penetrating damp repairs, condensation and mould control, basement waterproofing and external wall coatings. The survey tells you which, if any, you need.

Is the work guaranteed?

Yes. Damp proofing work carries our own written guarantee. The period depends on the treatment and is stated on your quote. We also hold full public liability insurance for the work we carry out.
